Friday, January 30, 2015, at the Bunda Mulia University campus in Ancol, North Jakarta, a training session was held on the topic of “Theory Building.” This training was attended by lecturers from the Master of Management and Master of Communication Science programs, as well as undergraduate program lecturers who are currently pursuing doctoral studies.
Prof. Dr. John JOI Ihalauw, the keynote speaker at the training, explained that “Theory Building” is a study that enables researchers to construct the components of a theory and independently carry out the process of building a theory. This topic is particularly interesting because, in addition to teaching, lecturers are also required to conduct research in accordance with the Tri Dharma of Higher Education. As researchers, it is essential to understand that their role goes beyond being users of existing theories; they are also expected to become producers who can develop new and novel theories.
Prof. Dr. John JOI Ihalauw earned his Professorship in Marketing Management in 2003 and has since published several works, including “Theory Construction: Components and Processes,” “Problems, Basic Philosophical Assumptions, and Research Design,” and more.
During the discussion session, lecturers actively asked various questions, particularly regarding qualitative research, its role, and its contributions compared to quantitative research. At the end of the session, the Master of Management and Master of Communication Science programs at Bunda Mulia University presented a certificate of appreciation to Prof. Dr. John JOI Ihalauw, which was handed over by Dr. Tonny Hendratono, Head of the Master of Management Program at UBM. This lecturer training is part of Bunda Mulia University’s commitment to continuously facilitate and encourage lecturers to refine and enhance their skills, not only in teaching but also in producing impactful research.
