Jakarta, November 9, 2024 – The Hospitality and Tourism Study Program of Universitas Bunda Mulia (UBM) successfully hosted a Community Service (Abdimas) activity at the UBM campus in Ancol, specifically in the Pastry Lab. The event was designed to foster cultural exchange between Indonesia and China through the sharing of traditional dessert recipes, creating a unique opportunity for both cultures to learn from one another in the field of culinary arts.
This event welcomed participants from the Indonesian Chinese community, who were introduced to the process of making two popular traditional Indonesian desserts: Cenil and Cendol. Participants learned to prepare these desserts individually, with the aim of empowering them to recreate these dishes at home.
The activity began with a live demonstration of how to make Cenil, followed by a demonstration of Cendol. Afterward, the participants were given the opportunity to make these desserts themselves. The participants showed great enthusiasm, particularly while preparing Cenil, which features a variety of colorful ingredients that captured their interest.
In addition to the hands-on training, participants were encouraged to ask questions about the world of pastry, especially traditional Indonesian desserts. The Indonesian Chinese community engaged actively by asking questions, such as how Cenil is similar to the Chinese dessert Tang Yuan, with the main difference being in the syrup used.
This event highlighted the importance of culinary exchange in bridging cultural gaps while also offering a deeper understanding of Indonesian food heritage, particularly in the field of pastry making.
